Custom Inputs
Define your own typed fields and inject them into jobs, clients, visits, contacts, and line items.
Custom Inputs are user-defined fields injected into your Jobs, Clients, Visits, Line Items, and Contacts. Whatever your business tracks that BranchSite doesn't have a field for — Lead Source, Square Footage, DBH, Species, gate codes — you can define it once and it appears on the right forms everywhere. Common starters: a Lead Source dropdown on jobs, a Square Footage number on jobs, and Visit Completion Notes.
Note: Custom Inputs must first be enabled with the Enable Custom Inputs toggle in Settings → Features, and managing definitions requires the custom-inputs permission.
Create a custom input
- Open Custom Inputs from the sidebar's Setup group.
- Click New Custom Input.
- Choose the two decisions you cannot change later:
- Resource Type — where the field lives: Client, Contact, Job, Visit, Line Item, Labor Resource, or Item Unit.
- Input Type — how it's entered: Text, Long Text, Checkbox, Date, Date & Time, Time, or Dropdown.
- Name it (e.g.
Linear Feet) and set a Value Type for text fields — Text, Number, Currency, or Percent — so values sort and total correctly in reports. - Configure behavior (see below), then click Save & Close — or Save & New to keep defining more.
Behavior options
- Section — groups inputs under a heading on Client and Job forms.
- Display Order and Placeholder Text — where the field sits and its hint text.
- Operations — limit the input to jobs in certain Operations; blank means all.
- Roles That Can Edit — restrict editing to certain roles; everyone else sees the value read-only.
- Required — the form can't be saved without a value.
- Important — for Line Item inputs, pins the field as its own column on the estimate; left unchecked, the input lives in the per-row inspector (open a line's chevron to fill it in). For Job inputs it pins the field above the estimate.
- Show on Visit page — surfaces the value where crews see it.
- Active — retire an input without deleting it.
Dropdown options
Dropdown inputs carry their own option list. Add options with Add Dropdown Option, drag to reorder, and deactivate options you no longer offer. Two power features help with long lists:
- Multi select lets one input capture several options at once (e.g. multiple job-site hazards); Searchable switches to a type-ahead picker, which multi-selects always use.
- Import options / Export options on the list page round-trips options through CSV — existing options are updated in place and new ones added, but nothing is deleted.
- Merge options consolidates duplicates: pick the survivors and merge stray options into them, and existing records follow.
Edit and delete
Resource Type and Input Type are locked after first save — create a new input if you picked wrong. Deleting is a soft delete: values already stored on records remain intact, but the input no longer appears on forms.
For how these fields look to the people filling them in, see Custom inputs on jobs.
